Kinetics of immunoglobulin M and G responses of nude and normal mice to Trypanosoma musculi.

A sensitive and specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was designed to measure the kinetics of Trypanosoma musculi-specific immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG responses in mice. Serum was obtained from congenitally athymic (nude) mice, their phenotypically normal, thymus-bearing littermates (NLM), and thymus cell-repaired nude mice (Nu-TC) at 6-day intervals throughout T. musculi parasitemia. N...

Chronic chlamydial genital infection in congenitally athymic nude mice.

Congenitally athymic nude mice and their heterozygous counterparts were inoculated intravaginally with the chlamydial agent of mouse pneumonitis, a Chlamydia trachomatis biovar. Heterozygous mice resolved their infections in 20 days, whereas nude mice developed chronic infections which lasted at least 265 days and did not resolve within the time course of the experiments. Heterozygous mice prod...

Absorption of ablastic activity from mouse serum by using a Trypanosoma musculi population rich in dividing forms.

An in vivo assay of ablastin activity was developed by passive transfer of ablastic serum into nude mice. Preparations of Trypanosoma musculi that contained 35 to 50% dividing forms removed ablastic activity from mouse serum, but absorption of serum with a parasite preparation consisting of less than 5% dividing forms did not appreciably alter ablastic activity. These data suggest that ablastin...

Thymus-dependent control of host defense mechanisms against Trypanosoma cruzi infection.

Congenitally athymic homozygous (nu/nu) mice were shown to be significantly more susceptible to Trypanosoma cruzi infection than their thymus-bearing heterozygous (nu/+) littermates, as measured by increased parasitemia, mortality rate, and shortened survival time. In addition, transplantation of neonatal thymus into athymic mice reestablished normal levels of resistance to T. cruzi, i.e., comp...

Experimental Q fever infection in congenitally athymic nude mice.

Congenitally athymic nude (nu/nu) mice and their phenotypically normal (nu/+) euthymic littermates were exposed to Coxiella burnetii administered as small-particle aerosols. After challenge, both strains of mice became infected, as characterized by rickettsemia, viable rickettsiae in the spleen, and serological conversion. The major difference noted was that euthymic animals had cleared rickett...
